August 23 -25 A Visit to Beijing

The 10 volunteers formed a delegation to visit a number of senior officials from the Chinese Central Government in Beijing before embarking on their yearlong voluntary teaching project. Mr. Thomas So led the delegation with Amway's Mrs. Angela Keung and Mr. David Fu invited along as special guests.

Mr. Chen Zuo'er, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, was the first to greet the delegation, showing his support and recognition for the programme during the meeting and thanking Amway for its tremendous support. He also acknowledged the courage and contribution of the teachers in supporting education work in poor and remote areas of their motherland.

Mr. Chen said he hoped the volunteers would be able to fully commit themselves to the programme and provide teachers and students in the aided region with new ideas and up-to-date information. Volunteer teachers are expected to experience life in the Mainland and get to know more about the history and culture of their motherland.

Mr. Zhang Baoqing, China's Vice-Minister of Education, and senior officials of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League also met with the delegation. Mrs. Angela Keung said she was pleased with the encouragement and recognition the volunteers had received from the Chinese government and gave some encouraging words of her own.

"You have to adjust your thoughts and behaviour once you take up the teacher's role," she said. "You are expected to serve as a role model for others and to exchange information with the teachers and students in the aided region. You can then earn their trust and cooperation and achieve the aim of bringing benefits to both sides."

Mr. Chen Zuo'er, the Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, received the delegation in Beijing.

Mr. Audie Wong, President of Amway China (fourth from left, back row) encouraged the volunteers in Beijing. He hoped that volunteers could treasure the precious teaching opportunity in remote area, commit themselves to helping others and gain a better understanding of their motherland.

The delegation met with the volunteers of Renmin University of China on August 24.
