水腫、暗瘡、腰痛、腹痛、情緒波動等,都是女性來經前常見的現象,又名為經前綜合症 (PMS)。經前綜合症其實並不算是一種疾病,多數在女性來經前10至14天出現,症狀多達150種,程度可分為輕微至非常嚴重等不同等級。約八成的女性均受到經前綜合症的影響,情況十分普遍。

一般女性在20歲左右便會出現經前綜合症,有些女性則在30歲以後才會出現相關症狀。女性在生育年齡期間,經前綜合症可能間歇性出現,在30至40歲之間,症狀可能變得更為嚴重,甚至對女性們的日常生活造成困擾。

Bloating, acne, aching waist, abdominal pain, mood swings - every woman can relate to the common symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that typically appear 10 to 14 days before menstruation begins.

PMS is not an illness. Rather, it is a common type of discomfort with more than 150 symptoms. About 80% of women suffer from PMS, usually in their 20s and early 30s, and the degree of severity varies from woman to woman. PMS can get even worse when women approach their pre-menopausal age.

成因

直到目前為止,經前綜合症的成因仍然未明。不少學者認為遺傳、心理、營養及習慣對經前綜合症有不同程度的影響,但卻未能證實當中的關連,但只能肯定經前綜合症與月經周期的賀爾蒙變化有一定關係。

若身體能夠適應賀爾蒙變化的女性,經前綜合症的症狀便不會對她們構成過大的反應;相反,身體對適應賀爾蒙變化較弱的女性,便可能會對她們產生明顯的刺激和不適。

影響

經前綜合症並不會引致其他疾病,只是有某些疾病可能較容易在月經來臨期間發作,如哮喘、癲癇和心臟病等。雖然如此,經前綜合症的症狀卻足以擾亂女性的日常生活,引起情緒不穩、影響工作效率等問題。

改善方法

經前綜合症並不是病,只是身體轉變所帶來的不適,女性應樂觀豁達地面對。平時應注重鍛鍊身體以增強體質,生活保持規律,避免精神緊張及過度勞累。

改善生活習慣 Better living

在月經期間可多聽音樂、多休息放鬆心情,亦可多做有助平靜身心的運動如瑜珈等,以分散注意力及減低不適感。

Listen to music, take adequate rest, and engage in activities such as yoga to divert your attention away from PMS discomforts.

Causes of PMS

The cause of PMS has not been clearly identified. Some researchers believe that heredity, psychological factors, diet and living habits are possible factors contributing to PMS, though there is still no evidence to prove any such relationships.

The only thing that can be said for sure is that PMS is related to hormonal changes throughout a woman's menstrual cycle. Women who are more adaptive to hormonal changes are less likely to be affected by PMS and vice versa.

The impact of PMS

PMS will not cause other illnesses, though women may become more vulnerable to certain types of sickness during the menstruation period, including asthma, epilepsy and even heart attacks. Mood swings can certainly upset a woman's daily routine during PMS, and problems such as reduced efficiency at work become more likely.

Recommendations

PMS is not an illness - it is discomfort brought about by a change in body condition. Women should take it easy and be optimistic in treating PMS problems. Leading a regular life and avoiding becoming too tense or tired is highly recommended.
